Fundamental research deals with hardware and software implementations appropriate to autonomous mobile devices (such as robots) that can reason. Much of this research is equally applicable to software agents and distributed devices. Some (past and published) projects have special relevance to sweb technologies. Open Connectivity Open Knowledge Base Connectivity (OKBC, see www.ai.sri.com/~okbc/ ) is a protocol speci cation for accessing knowledge bases stored in knowledge representation systems (KRS). It gures in several of the sweb-related projects described in this book, and its ontology model can be browsed online at the Ontolingua Server (see 9). OKBC provides a uniform model of KRSs based on a common conceptualization of classes, individuals, slots, facets, and inheritance. OKBC is de ned independently of programming language and consists of a set of operations that provide a generic interface to an underlying KRS. This interface isolates an application from many of the idiosyncrasies of a speci c KRS. Tools developed from the OKBC model can access any compliant KRS in a consistent way for example, graphical browsers, frame editors, analysis tools, and inference tools. It was part of the DARPA-sponsored program on Rapid Knowledge Formation (RKF) and previously High Performance Knowledge Bases (HPKB). SRI developed technology to support collaborative construction and effective use of distributed large-scale repositories of highly expressive reusable ontologies. Agent-based Computing AIC has a number of signi cant projects that concern agent-based computing (see www.ai.sri.com/~ortiz/agents), classi ed into the following basic groups:

Every reader imaginable is available to a college from Blackboard. When discussing the Semantic Web, it is prudent to note that we are in fact dealing with but one of several interrelated emerging technology domains: Web Services (providing distributed functionality), Grid Services (integrating distributed resources), and the Semantic Web (mapping and managing the resources). This book s primary focus is on the last of these. In order to map Web resources more precisely, computational agents require machinereadable descriptions of the content and capabilities of Web accessible resources. These descriptions must be in addition to the human-readable versions of that information, complementing but not supplanting. The requirement to be machine-readable is non-negotiable, because in future in fact, practically already now almost all software (and devices) will be innately Web-aware. Leveraging autonomic-computing technology enables agents and empowered devices to display independent activity and initiative, thus requiring less hands-on management by users. Already, an important expectation about software is that even dumb applications can deal with basic Web connectivity in ways appropriate to their primary function.
