The same is true of the built-in menu bars and shortcut menus. For example, you don t want your users to be able to select Design view from any of the built-in menus. To create a new toolbar or modify an existing one, you must enter toolbar customize mode. Open the Customize dialog box by choosing Toolbars from the View menu and then choosing Customize from the submenu. (You can also right-click on any open toolbar to open the toolbar shortcut menu and then choose Customize from that menu.) The Customize dialog box with the Toolbars tab selected is shown in Figure 24-2.

Reports do not have a Datasheet or Form view. To see what the printed report will look like, click the Print Preview button (shown in Figure 2-17) on the toolbar when you re in the Report window in Design view. From the Database window, you can also select the report name and then click the Preview button or right-click the report name and choose Print Preview from the shortcut menu. Figure 2-18 shows a Report window in Print Preview.

Access initially shows you the upper left corner of the report. To see the report centered in full-page view in Print Preview, click the Zoom button on the toolbar. To see two pages sideby-side, click the Two Pages button. This gives you a reduced picture of two pages, as shown in Figure 2-19 on the next page, and an overall idea of how Access arranges major areas of data on the report. Unless you have a large monitor, however, you won t be able to read the data. Click the Multiple Pages button to see more than two pages. When you move the mouse pointer over the window in Print Preview, the pointer changes to a magnifying glass icon. To zoom in, place this icon in an area that you want to see more closely and then press the left mouse button. You can also click the Zoom button on the toolbar again to see a close-up view of the report and then use the scroll bars to move around in the magnified report. Use the Zoom box on the toolbar to magnify or shrink your view. Access also provides an OfficeLinks button on the standard Print Preview toolbar to let you output the report to Microsoft Office Word or Microsoft Office Excel.

To help developers visually model their data mappings, Visual Studio provides an integrated designer. This designer allows developers to drag and drop objects from their database or manually add conceptual models and visually manage the mappings. Although some expert programmers may shun designers, the tools can often assist not only in seeing a snapshot of the model, but also in helping to learn a new technology. If we re unsure how to map a specific data relationship, we can try using the design tool. We can always go back and tweak the generated code as long as we don t plan on regenerating it.
