I use functions in three ways: at the command line, as commands in scripts, and as a reference. For use at the command line, I source some of the function libraries in my shell startup file; others I load at the command line when I need them. In scripts, I usually source a single function library, and it will load any other libraries it needs. At other times, I use the function library as a reference, and I copy the code, sometimes modifying it, into the body of another script or function. The functions in this book are mostly stored in libraries of related functions. You may find a different structure more suited to your coding style. If so, go ahead and reorganize them.

A couple of items in the file deserve explanation. Lines 22 25 illustrate the usage of <g:each>, an iteration tag. In this case, it is iterating over a collection of all controller classes that are a part of the application to display the name of the controller class in a list. Line 4 is an example of using layouts by convention. In this case, the layout metatag causes the main layout (main.gsp) to be applied to the page. You might recall that all layouts reside within the grails-app/views/layouts directory. You have created the layout, and it s looking good. You can see the results of your work in Figure 5-6.

Illustration of user interface thread and worker thread If you build web applications solely using technologies such as HTML, JScript, and Ajax, you can t take advantage of threading in the underlying operating system. Using multiple threads allows you to build more complex applications that have a high degree of responsiveness to users. With multiple cores and multiple processors in computers these days, it would be surprising if Silverlight did not provide support for using threads. Of course, using threads introduces new sets of problems for developers. First, you want to be careful to not overuse threads. Since ultimately each thread is backed by an operating system thread, there are a limited number of threads you can use, because each thread requires memory and costs CPU time. Another significant problem occurs any time several threads want to access the same data. If two threads want to modify a shared piece of data, such as an integer variable, it s possible to see unexpected behavior if one thread modifies the variable while the other thread is in the middle of a modification operation. This is known as a race condition, since both threads are in a race to access the shared data and it s unpredictable which will win. Race conditions are only one type of potential threading issue. If you need to use threads in your Silverlight application, use them carefully. Of course, the benefit of threads can outweigh the inherent problems when used properly.

Setting up the wireframe exposes you to layouts, templates, CSS, and a couple of Grails tags. Grails, like all modern web frameworks, supports tag libraries. The Grails tag library is similar to the JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library (JSTL) and Struts tags. It contains tags for everything from conditional logic to rendering and layouts. The following section provides a quick overview of the Grails tags.6

I would recommend that you avoid having the same function in more than one library, unless the subsequent versions offer additional features that are not usually needed. The first library in this book is a collection of functions that I use in many scripts. All are used in at least one script in the book.
