The Commoncs file contains a number of class definitions The first class encapsulates the DataContext that represents the connection to the database It also includes methods to access each of the tables and other database objects Following the DataContext class, the generated file includes class definitions for each table in the database Unlike the simplistic class definitions we ve used thus far, the generated classes have more business functionality Each class is defined as a partial class In chapter 8, we ll look at extending this functionality to add custom business logic The table definitions also contain built-in functionality to manage robust change tracking When any property s values are changed, the generated code fires change notification events and calls partial methods that will be called if they are implemented The table classes also offer accessors and tracking of related child objects.

You re in the home stretch. You have almost all the forms and reports required for the tasks you want to implement in your application, but you need some additional forms to make it easier to navigate to different tasks. To add a professional touch, you should design a custom menu bar and a custom toolbar for most forms (and perhaps for some reports) and custom shortcut menus for forms, form controls, and reports. You should take advantage of built-in tools to check the efficiency of your design, and you should make sure that none of your forms allow design changes when in Form view. Finally, you need to set the startup properties of your database to let Microsoft Access know how to get your application rolling, and you need to perform a final compile of your Visual Basic code to achieve maximum performance.

When your application is running, the user probably won t want or need some of the Access design features. However, you might want to provide some additional toolbar buttons on your form toolbar and menu bar so that the user has direct access to commands such as Save Record and Find Next. For example, open the LawTrack Contacts sample database (Contacts.mdb), open the frmContactsPlain form in Form view (which uses the standard Form View toolbar), right-click the toolbar, and select Custom Form Toolbar. You can see some useful differences between the two toolbars, as shown in Figure 24-1. Buttons the user won t need (such as Form View, Save, Print, Print Preview, Format Painter, and New Object) aren t available on the custom toolbar. (None of the forms in the LawTrack Contacts database are designed to be printed.) However, the Custom Form Toolbar does have Close and Save Record buttons added at the left end, and the New Record and Delete Record buttons are clustered with the new Save Record button. In the LawTrack Contacts application, all forms (except frmContactsPlain and a few other example forms) have their Toolbar property set to use the custom toolbar.

Following the table definitions, SqlMetal generates classes to represent the result types for the various stored procedures and functions These classes are used as the return types of the function declarations established in the custom DataContext class SqlMetal is great if we want to regenerate our entire database model into a single class file It can even be included as part of a continuous integration practice by scripting it into a custom MSBuild action The tool does not give the flexibility to pick and choose which elements will be generated If there are relationships that aren t included in the database implementation, including table relationships beyond primary key-foreign key relationships that can t be predefined in the database, they won t be scripted as part of the SqlMetal implementation.
